First of all, my mother-in-law refers to the new things we adults take for granted that my baby is learning as "tricks". She is not a dog. She is not a hooker. She is a brains-growing, mind-stimulating little person. But she has a pretty cool new trick:
I can tell her to bring me something, and she is getting pretty good at doing it. When distracting her by simply putting a toy in front of her face has failed (she is getting in the habit of pushing things away when she is in a tantrum), asking her to find and bring me 'the cow' or 'your milk' is doing its job. Not all objects have specific names in her mind yet. 'The cow' is actually a plastic cow from Matthew's childhood. and 'milk' is whatever is in her cup at the time. She is also good at 'book' and 'duck'. One syllable seems to be our boundary. If I ask her to bring me something, and she doesn't know what I'm talking about, she'll bring me whatever she wants. Halfway there ain't too shabby.
