Jamie had to work this morning, so I decided to continue Aurelia's education in regards to the finest of nerd movies. We have already made it through the original Star Wars trilogy and have decided to go with The Lord of the Rings trilogy today.
For anyone that has seen these films, this sounds like a daunting task. They are each approximately 3 hours and have long stretches in each that are important to the story, but less than entertaining to a 2 year old (and to a 37 year old). So we compromise and watch them the way that Jamie and I have watched them since we bought them on DVD - we skip all of the walking parts.
This cuts the entire first movie out of the series, and cuts the other two down to reasonable 3 hours between the two. It also means that we can stop watching the films at the natural ending, rather than wading through the last 45 minutes of Return of the King to watch the Hobbits express their love for each other.
While this sounds awesome and reasonable, I have still had to negotiate this with Aurelia. She will allow my choice of movies provided I pick her choice. I have been told by other parents that their kids will develop a favorite movie and watch it over and over. At the time I thought this sounded cute, and thought to myself that I could probably influence her decisions based on what I would like to watch with her. This has proven to be 100% false. She wants to watch the same movie over and over and over, without change. So even, if we do choose a movie I like, by the 19th viewing I am over it.
Thus far she has wrecked:
Toy Story
Monsters Inc.
Lion King
Tangled
Despicable Me
The Incredibles
Tarzan
Beauty and the Beast
The movies I would like her to enjoy, but she refuses to watch:
Finding Nemo
Star Wars
Avengers - and all Avenger related movies
The Slamming Salmon
Hot Fuzz
The A Team
Finally, the list of shows that she liked before she could understand English and that I am now unable to watch with her:
Family Guy
Archer
Beavis and Butthead
I am a great father. Later today we will discuss the science of feeding children when their mother is away.
(edit) I realized after I had published this the first time that I have never wound my way back around to my original thought. Aragorn is awesome.
