Friday

This laundry day brought to you by: my amazingly handy husband!

Last week, we had a problem. The barrel of the dryer was turning and turning, making the characteristic clinking and tumbling noises of doing its job. I let it go about its business while I went about mine. Naps and meals and about three hours later, I realized the first load of wash was still "drying". This constituted a ginormous problem. Earlier on in the year, disappointed with the state of my house, I decided to make a chore list. Mondays were cleaning days--like every room gets a bath. My mom always had once weekly cleaning days and once monthly deep cleaning days. I just stuck with the weekly plan to start. Thursdays were touch-up dusting and vacuuming. Standard daily chores were dishes, taking out the trash and recycles and general keeping tidy. Fridays were laundry days. The only chore day that remained steadfast and always on the schedule has been Laundry Fridays. It sometimes (often) bleeds into Saturday (Monday), but by and large, we get those clothes cleaned and put away on Friday.

But last Friday, the dryer developed an illness. Knowing next to nothing about appliances, my main concern was that only the week prior, I had cleaned and organized and nested myself into a frenzied realization that the house was "ready" for the baby. But now what?? Now, I would have piles of clothing building and filling the hampers and laundry room, and nothing would be clean and we would be dressed in trash bags for the arrival of our newborn--probably the following day. Yes, it's that bad. Or, we'd have to go buy a new dryer (that wouldn't match the washer...).

But my dear husband, dutiful as he is, spent Saturday morning pulling pieces out of the ailing dryer and tinkering as Sebby men are wont to do. He spent Saturday afternoon complaining of a cold (which I will grant because I gave it to everyone). Sunday revealed that Home Depot does not carry the necessary parts to repair my antique (5-year-old) dryer. The only store in town that does is closed on Sundays. The same cold from the weekend kept Matt home on Monday, but he wasn't too sick (thank goodness) to retrieve the whachamacallems and put it all back together. Only $65 and four days later, I was able to complete the one chore I still diligently do.

So, in conclusion, today's laundry day is made possible by a handiness that I was not aware my husband possessed.
